Sorry Puerto Ricans, even though you bought your iPhone 4s with U.S. dollars, endure AT&T's shoddy "national" coverage, and are United States citizens, Apple doesn't think you're entitled to a free case like real Americans. Apple originally told Puerto Ricans that they would qualify for free apology cases, but decided to cancel all orders being shipped to Puerto Rico after claiming that they were "unable to ship to an international address."

One understandably pissed customer writes:

I bought my new Apple iPhone 4 from ATT two weeks ago. I live in Puerto Rico and for ATT, Puerto Rico is part of their National coverage. I have a National Data Plan with free roaming everywhere in the States and never had a problem before.

I registered my iPhone 4 with no issues with apple.com. A few days ago Apple sent me an email letting me know I qualify for the free case program and asked me to install the app in my iPhone 4 in order to be able to order my free case. I followed all the instructions and ordered the case. I received an Order Confirmation email with an October ETA for delivery.

Last night I received the following email from Apple saying that they do not ship to "International locations", therefore my free case order has been canceled. I am confused. Is Apple good enough to sell their iPhone 4 to me through their ATT partner but now they won't send me the free case? They can sell me the phone but can't send me the solution to the antenna problem they caused?

I recall hearing Steve Jobs saying that this free case solution would be for everybody who bought an iPhone 4. What kind of service is this?Is Apple discriminating us?Apple sent out the following notice:

Mailing a free replacement case to apologize for releasing a phone that drops calls when held? You get the idea. The post office even has a helpful guide to abbreviating state names. Apple can find Puerto Rico smushed right between the equally exotic destinations of Pennsylvania and Rhode Island.

Obviously Apple should find a way to ship the free replacement cases to their Puerto Rican customers. If they can't, Puerto Ricans might want to consider calling their politiciansyou know, the ones who sit in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Yesterday, we told you that HTC and Sprint had managed to get everything squared away with the Android 2.2 update, and sure enough, it looks like everything is still going well. Why do we say that? Because you can actually go download the official update right now, courtesy of Sprint's support site. That's right you don't have to wait for the OTA update that's set to kick off on August 3rd. Find out after the break if the list of features is good enough for you to jump the gun and start your download early, or if you'll be able to hold off and wait.

As you can see, it looks like HTC managed to throw just about everything, plus the trunk, into this update. Which makes sense, considering that everyone who's bought the EVO since it came out has been aching to get their fingers on this version of Android. Some stand out features are that Market widget that will let you install applications from the SD card, and the new pre-loaded widgets like the calculator. Using your calculator without having to go into the menu, or into the application itself is pretty cool, if you ask us. Plus, don't forget that new user interface for the FM radio. How cool is that?

CAIRO Aid group Doctors Without Borders said it has been forced to suspend work in a volatile part of South Sudan because of attacks against his staff, as violence between rival tribes surges in the area.

The group, also known as Medecins Sans Frontieres, said Friday that armed men stole medical equipment from one of its health clinics twice this month in Jonglei state. Staff members have also been attacked while delivering aid, the organization said.

Heavily armed southern tribes have had to compete for scarce water and pasturage in the area. Clashes reignited more than a year ago and intensified beyond traditional cattle raids to include attacks on civilians across the entire south.

Aid agencies have said some 2,500 people were killed and 350,000 others were displaced in 2009 due to the violence.

A statement on Doctors Without Borders' website called on armed groups to respect its neutrality so it can resume providing aid. It said more than 160 malnourished children had been receiving treatment at its clinic in the Gumuruk area and that there were about 20 new cases each day.

A 20-year civil war between north and south Sudan ended in a peace agreement five years ago, but left the south awash in weapons. Sudan has continued to suffer widespread violence, including in its western Darfur region.

In the first season of Jersey Shore, Nicole Snooki Polizzi was Snookin' For Love. However, during the third season, it appears that she'll be Snookin' For Bail Money instead. The diminuitive Princess of Poughkeepsie was just arrested by New Jersey police on domestic disturbance charges. Not many details are available right now, but TMZ is reporting that she was bonging beers on the beach all afternoon long. We'll keep you posted as we learn more.

It should be any entrepreneur's dream come true. But for some startups, a sudden, overnight explosion in growth can nearly bring the operation to its knees.

Such was the recent experience of Blank Label, a Web-based company that sells custom-made, user-designed dress shirts for men. After launching in October 2009, Blank Label enjoyed some modest initial success, selling a few hundred shirts in the first few months of business.

The online buzz generated by the startup's unique service was enough to capture the attention of The New York Times and other prominent media outlets, whose positive coverage in mid-May quickly sent a flood of new customers to their site. Immediately following the press coverage, Blank Label's Web traffic increased by about 4,000% overnight, and conversion rates nearly tripled.

For a brick-and-mortar store, a sudden influx of customers can result in long lines. Online, it can cause servers to go down.

The team knew there was a problem when they started receiving emails from would-be customers asking when their website was going to go back up, according to Tommy Wong, co-founder and lead evangelist for Blank Label.

"There were massive problems with the site," says Wong. "First images wouldn't load, then pages stopped loading."

They tried rebooting their web server, but found that the problems only accelerated. A few hours later, they moved their website to bigger, more capable server space.

The technical issues were only the beginning of the headaches.

Before long, it became apparent that the supplier they had hired to produce the shirts was unable to keep up with the sudden demand, despite assurances to the contrary. Orders started shipping late, sometimes with defects. Within a week of the initial influx, Blank Label switched suppliers.

A new payment processor was in order as well, because the one they had been working with was alarmed at the sudden and dramatic increase of orders and decided to end their relationship.

In addition to website stability and production issues, the company's owners found that customer service was becoming too much to handle. To keep up with the requests, the company had no choice but to hire three customer support staff members, as well as outsource some technical work via oDesk.

Another co-creation startup that experienced growing pains is a company specializing in custom-made chocolate bars called Chocri. For them, the scalability issues have been seasonal, as demand for co-created chocolate has typically peaked during the winter holiday season, causing Chocri to sell out of inventory two Christmases in a row. The overwhelming demand has required CEO Carmen Magar to make a number of changes, including expansion of staff, moving into a larger space and reassessing the company's production practices.

When they first started out, Chocri would produce the milk chocolate, dark chocolate and white chocolate candy bars separately and then recombine orders. "That's crazy when you make 50,000 bars a month," says Magar. "So now we make all types at the same time."

Today, things are mostly back on track at Blank Label and Chocri, although there is still a two-week delay on new orders at Blank Label.

"I always feel like there's more work to be done," says Wong, adding that his company is working on further streamlining the ordering process and hoping to speed up shipping times.

If he could offer any advice to budding entrepreneurs and small businesses, Wong says it would be to ensure upfront that technical infrastructure and production resources are prepared for potentially rapid growth.

When all was said and done, Wong's company had hired four new people, and switched suppliers, servers and payment processors in order to cope with their sudden success.

These days, all it takes is a mention in a few high-traffic news outlets or some social media buzz to bring tens of thousands of people to your company's door. As some entrepreneurs have learned the hard way, it quite literally pays to be prepared.

This morning's Washington Post reveals that the Department Of Justice has been pressuring Congress to expand its power to obtain records of Americans' private Internet activity through the use of National Security Letters (NSLs).

NSLs, you may remember, are one of the most powerful and frightening tools of government surveillance to be expanded by the Patriot Act. These letters allow the FBI to secretly demand data from phone companies and internet service providers about the private communications of ordinary citizens. The letters include a gag order, which forbids recipients from ever revealing the letters' existence to their coworkers, their friends, or even to their family members, much less the public.

The gag order and the lack of oversight make this power ripe for abuse. Indeed, the FBI's systemic abuse of this power was confirmed both by a Department Of Justice investigation and in documents obtained by EFF through Freedom of Information Act litigation. Yet, in the years since that abuse became publicly known, there has been no reform of the law governing NSLs.

Now, the DOJ is asking Congress to pass vague and broad new language meant to expand the kinds of data that can be acquired through NSLs. This morning's Washington Post article suggests that the new language could allow access to detailed web browsing history, search history, location information, or even Facebook friend requests.

Considering the FBI's dismal record on surveillance abuses, this is a stunning and brazen request. They're asking the Senate to reward bad behavior by allowing even more bad behavior. We're hoping that the Senate will have the courage and integrity to turn them down. Keep reading Deeplinks for more news on this as it develops.

We got word this afternoon that the Parrot AR.Drone Quadricopter is going to be sold exclusively through Brookstone and is available for pre-order right now for $299.99. Brookstone plans on shipping orders on September 3rd, and the first 300 orders get a free flight bag. (Tempting, I know.) Currently, Brookstone is only willing to ship the Parrot AR.Drone to customers inside of the USA, and optionally available is a $49.95 bundle which includes a additional hull, battery, and an iPhone 3G/3GS case. They're also selling two and three year service plans for $39.99 or $49.99, although it's unclear whether or not breaking your AR.Drone by crashing it in to something is considered "normal wear and tear."

The device is currently controlled using an iPhone/iPod Touch app which communicates through Wi-Fi to the AR.Drone itself. Simply tap on Launch and the AR.Drone takes off and hovers over a stationary spot. On screen controls are easy and effective.

Left/right buttons allow you to rotate 360 degrees in one spot, while up/down buttons control altitude. Pressing on a special button activates tilt-control on the iPhone/iPod Touch itself. This allow you to fly the device by naturally tilting the iPhone itself. Meanwhile, the on screen controls are overlayed with live video coming from the front-facing camera of the Drone itself.

In picking it up for the first time, I found it very easy to maneuver. The main thing I had to get used to was using the drone's point of view to steer, rather than my own. Check out our video:

The Parrot AR.Drone has some serious technology built in to it with its ability to auto-level itself, and pilot itself if it loses the connection with the device you're controlling it with. Remote control helicopters (which require much more skill to fly) sell for upwards of $1,000, making the $299.99 they're asking for everything the AR.Drone is capable of doing seem surprisingly appealing. Amazon has unveiled new 6-inch Kindle devices sporting a new design, display and color option. The smaller Kindles now come in graphite color and have the same e-ink display as Kindle DX with 50 percent improved contrast and offers 20 percent faster page turns. Amazon has also managed to shave off the extra bulk by making the Kindle 21 percent smaller and 15 percent lighter from its predecessor.

However, it's the inclusion of Wi-Fi that makes the new Kindle more attractive. Users now options to go with the Wi-Fi only Kindle and Wi-Fi+3G Kindle model.

Both models will ship from August 27 but can be pre-ordered now for $139 (Wi-Fi only) and $189 (Wi-Fi+3G).

Amazon's Kindle has always been an interesting device to me. When I first heard about it in late 2007, I was sure I wouldn't want one. It was awkward looking and at $399, way too expensive. But when the second iteration came in 2009 with a sleeker look, I decided to buy one to see what all the fuss was about. I quickly learned to love it.

That said, I still didn't see any real future for such a product. At $359, it was still absurdly expensive. And with all the rumors swirling about Apple's impending tablet device, it seemed like it was a temporary niche product, at best. But on the eve of the unveiling of the third iteration of the device, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos is making things more interesting.

Specifically, Bezos seems to understand that he cannot compete with the iPad. And he doesn't want to. Mr. Bezos said he intentionally left off some potential whiz-bang features from the new Kindle, like color and touch-screen controls, that would have introduced compromises to the reading experience such as glare, the Wall Street Journal reports.

There are going to be 100 companies making LCD [screen] tablets. Why would we want to be 101? I like building a purpose-built reading device. I think that is where we can make a real contribution, he continues.

Whether you believe that or not, it goes against reports from last year that Amazon was trying to figure out how best to compete against more advanced tablets by offering features such as color screens. Bezos even said that they had them in the laboratory to test out. But he also said that they weren't ready for prime time, so color Kindles were at least a few years away.

But his new statements seems to indicate that Amazon may never go in that direction with the Kindle. If their goal is just to focus on making the best reading device, why go with color and video, is his reasoning. Here's his killer quote from the WSJ piece:

For the vast majority of books, adding video and animation is not going to be helpful. It is distracting rather than enhancing. You are not going to improve Hemingway by adding video snippets.

That's a smart position to take for now. From a consumer hardware perspective, Amazon was never going to be able to compete with Apple they simple lack the experience. So instead, Amazon is going to forge ahead with this dedicated device in hopes that it will catch on with mainstream consumers before the more expensive tablets do.

Naturally, the key to all of this is the price. The new Kindle will come in two flavors: a 3G one for $189 and a WiFi one for $139. The latter price is almost a full third less than the original Kindle was. It's also a much, much cheaper than the entry-level iPad at $499. $99 still seems like the ultimate sweet-spot for the Kindle, but it's hard to argue with $139.

The problem here is that I'm not convinced Amazon really wanted to go that low. Remember that it was only hours after Barnes & Noble announced their Nook would be $199 (and $149 for the WiFi version) that Amazon dropped their price from $259 all the way down to $189 exactly $10 cheaper. Undoubtedly, Amazon has lowered the costs associated with the making the Kindle over the past three years, but $399 to $189 is pretty dramatic.

Everyone felt the Kindle was far too expensive at $399 or $359 but Amazon still resisted the pressure to lower the price quickly. The reason? They had complete control of the market they didn't have to. It was only when the Nook, Border's Kobo, and the iPad came out that the prices truly started to fall fast.

So the question now: is Amazon making any money on selling these devices? Some may think that doesn't matter because they're Amazon's way to move their content (pretty much the anti-Apple approach). But as Bezos points out, the Kindle store and the Kindle hardware are completely separate entities within Amazon. Internally, we view them as two stand-alone businesses that have to succeed on their own merits, he tells WSJ. Can selling the Kindle hardware at such a low price fulfill that?

The larger problem remains for Amazon as well. While the Kindle is undoubtedly easier on the eyes than reading with the backlit iPad, the wide range of things that the iPad and other tablets can do will eventually win the day. Amazon's price cuts have extended that day quite a bit, but it's still inevitable.

So is Amazon content to rule the space for a couple of years while not making a lot of money on devices? Or is Bezos simply bluffing on Amazon's future Kindle aspirations?

Also, does anyone really think Hemingway would have been pleased with his work on a Kindle?

Well, sure enough, it turns out that something did come from the Amazon Kindle selling out, with no sign of any restocking happening. Because Amazon has just pulled the curtain off their brand new Kindle, and sure enough, it's actually worth the wait. Bringing in that new graphite look, plus a new look and feel to the keyboard, the new Kindle brings with it the same features that we all know and love, but plenty of new ones that we know plenty of folks are looking forward to.

What's it called? The Kindle. Yeah, we know, it's not meant to rock the world with its new and fantastic name. But, the new Kindle is 21 percent smaller than the previous model, and it's also 15 percent lighter. It also has a 20 percent faster refresh rate than the previous Kindle, and it still has an E-Ink display. It comes in two colors: white and graphite. As the title suggests, there's two models that will be made available on August 27th, one WiFi-only model, and a 3G-capable device that will still rock AT&T's network.

The screen size is still 6-inches, but Amazon stresses that the refresh rate is faster, and the display's contrast is much better. The internal storage is 4GB this time around, and the battery is measured at one month without any wireless turned on. Or, if you have to have your wireless turned on, it will go for 10 days. There are also going to be UK-based versions, for 109 and 149, respectively.

The keyboard has been slightly tweaked and streamlined, and the new five-way controls are smaller. However, probably the most notable change is the Webkit browser that Amazon is saying is experimental. Check out the full press release below.

Well, sure enough, it turns out that something did come from the Amazon Kindle selling out, with no sign of any restocking happening. Because Amazon has just pulled the curtain off their brand new Kindle, and sure enough, it's actually worth the wait. Bringing in that new graphite look, plus a new look and feel to the keyboard, the new Kindle brings with it the same features that we all know and love, but plenty of new ones that we know plenty of folks are looking forward to.

What's it called? The Kindle. Yeah, we know, it's not meant to rock the world with its new and fantastic name. But, the new Kindle is 21 percent smaller than the previous model, and it's also 15 percent lighter. It also has a 20 percent faster refresh rate than the previous Kindle, and it still has an E-Ink display. It comes in two colors: white and graphite. As the title suggests, there's two models that will be made available on August 27th, one WiFi-only model, and a 3G-capable device that will still rock AT&T's network.

The screen size is still 6-inches, but Amazon stresses that the refresh rate is faster, and the display's contrast is much better. The internal storage is 4GB this time around, and the battery is measured at one month without any wireless turned on. Or, if you have to have your wireless turned on, it will go for 10 days. There are also going to be UK-based versions, for 109 and 149, respectively.
